Ultimately, it doesn't matter who was right and who was wrong about the current political system at the time, because my beef is Machias is entirely due to his inability to put his petty bitterness aside and to stop antagonizing people who (1) had no hand in creating the circumstances that led to his hatred of nobles, (2) were still children and had yet to participate in any meaningful way in the political system that Machias hates so much, and (3) treated him with kindness and respect and/or risked their lives to save his. But would this hypothetically justify Jusis if he were to constantly give Machias shit for this over the course of a 50+ hour game? No, it wouldn't. Hell, the storm the reformists cooked up at the end of CS3 is magnitudes worse than anything the nobles ever did. Seeing them at the racetrack in CSIII under the guise of "trading info" was great and perfectly represents their begrudging friendship.Īnd CS3 shows the nobility in a much better light while consistently showing that the reformists have a lot more baggage and are a lot more morally gray than they were portrayed in either CS1 or CS2. However in later games it gets more entertaining as it becomes more of a good-natured rivalry where they just bicker about things but ultimately still have each others' backs in the end. Like Machias is openly spiteful whereas Jusis is just kind of snarky and has that "oh so we're doing this, yeah all right bring it on" vibe to him. However as we see in the world, it's actually not as clear cut as that and most nobles and commoners tend to get along at least decently well, even at Thors, so the extreme standoffish relationship between Machias and Jusis becomes almost a caricatured version of the actual social dynamic.Īlso it's kind of interesting in that it's fairly one-sided where Machias is the one who mainly supplies most of the antagonism and Jusis kind of just reacts to it and eggs him on. I think its implementation was a little hamfisted in CS1 but it's clear that it's supposed to be a microcosm of the class war between nobles and commoners.
